I won't say I have a highly fulfilling job. But it's a job I know how to do, and within its narrow parameters, I think I do it well. It may be the first job in my life that has only a limited hold on my thoughts when I'm away from it and doesn't plague me with anxiety and frustration at all hours of the day and night.
Which is to say that I don't take it all that seriously. Thank god!
But I still feel an awful tug of war now that Sam has arrived. For most of my life, I've defined myself by what I did or didn't do for a living. That's been my driving force. Now, I'd much rather be a dad than anything else. So, how awful that I must le
ave my dad hat on the shelf for much of the day and put on my hard-nosed manager hat.
I never thought having a child could make the workaday world seem so petty. I venture into it out of necessity, but what a joy to return to the real world, back at home!
These days, more than ever, I'm working for the weekend. Though I'll take those late nights and early mornings when I can get 'em, too.
